This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs.

Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work placement

Police checks for aged care workers

To make sure older people are safely and properly cared for, the Australian Government has put a number of measures in place, including national criminal history record checks (also known as police checks).

All staff working in aged care homes and Home Care Package services who have supervised or unsupervised access to care recipients must obtain a police check. All volunteers that are likely to have unsupervised access to care recipients must also obtain a police check (this includes work placement students)

Vocational Outcomes

Students graduating with CHC33015 (and passing a Police Clearance Check) are eligible to apply for the following job roles:

Target Market

As determined through industry consultation and market research the Target market for this qualification are individuals who are interested in working in regulated residential aged care and who by following an individualized plan, provide person-centered support to people who may require support due to ageing.

This includes

• New entrants into the Aged Care industry who require formal qualifications to start working as Aged Care workers

• Existing aged care workers wanting to increase/upgrade their formal care skills and knowledge as they relate to their area of employment. Where these individuals are interested to work in regulated residential facilities under direct or regular supervision within clearly defined organisation guidelines and service plans. These facilities might include:

• Residential Aged Care

• Community Aged Care

• Home based Aged Care

These workers:

• Carry out activities to maintain personal care and/or other activities of living forpeople in an aged care setting including first aid assistance

• Carry out activities related to an individualised plan

• Report directly to a supervisor and are not responsible for other workers.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT)

SMTB acknowledges that students will have differing levels of previously attained training, experience and skills when they apply for a position as a student at SMTB. In recognition of this SMTB recognises all previous learning and experience through Credit Transfer (CT) and the Recognition of Previous Learning (RPL)

Credit Transfer (CT)

SMTB makes available to all registering students Credit Transfer (CT) for all units of competency for which the student can provide a verifiable transcript (from another RTO) showing a competent result (C, CT, RPL) for the same unit as trained by SMTB.

Students are required to indicate their requirement for CT on the application form and submit along with supporting evidence. A SMTB assessor will review the supporting documentation and provide a written CT Application Outcome to the student either awarding CT or denying with a reason and options for progress.

For all units that SMTB awards a CT – this will be reflected on the academic testamur as CT

Course durations may be affected by the awarding of CT

Recognition of Previous Learning (RPL)

• Students will be required to apply for RPL during the registration process

• Students will be provided with an RPL Candidate Kit and a SMTB Trainer and assessor to assist them through the RPL process

• Applicants will be required to provide supporting evidence including certified copies of previous relevant training

• Applicants will receive an RPL Outcome Letter

• RPL will be entered onto student academic records as RPL

• RPL is available for all units except for First Aid

• Age (with reference to underage learners only or minimum allowable entry age)
